The man smashed the kaleidoscope and crammed the pieces into his mouth, chewed them slowly and methodically. He opened his mouth and a pale, shimmering projection of my dead grandfather emerged, floating silently just inches from my face, gesturing for me to take a kaleidoscope from his hand.
